Understanding Muffler Metal

Many different metal are used to make the exhaust system last as long as possible and maintain its original functionality. For the most part, muffler and exhaust systems are made from 400-series steel, usually 409. This type of high carbon steel is light, relatively durable, and has a generally long life. Other options are available from aftermarket manufacturers.

The problem with any type of steel is that eventually it will rust. Stainless steel offers some protection from the weather, but it will eventually rust. Aluminized steel is steel coated with aluminum to help protect the underlying metal from rust. Abrasion from rocks can damage the aluminum coating and allow rust to set into the underlying steel. Other alloys and coated steels are available that include nickel, chromium, manganese, copper, and titanium.
